Monsoon menace: Conjunctivitis cases rise in Delhi, Gujarat, Arunachal Pradesh. Schools shut in Itanagar

As whole India continues to receives severe rainfall, conjunctivitis cases have been on rise in several states of India. Eye infection continues to spread among children in Delhi, Gujarat, and in Northeastern states. To prevent the further spread of conjunctivitis, all the schools, up to class 8th have been suspended from 25th July to 29 July in Itanagar.

There have been multiple cases of the infection in Delhi due to humid weather and continuous rainfall. Doctors have cautioned people to take sufficient precautions against the “highly contagious” infection. THey hav also advised people to take proper hygeine behaviour keep the infection under control.

Dr Aarti Nangia, senior consultant, ophthalmology at Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj here, said there has been an “increase” in cases of eye infections and conjunctivitis reported in Delhi lately.

“It is either an isolated infection of the eyes or along with an upper respiratory tract infection like cough or cold. Because the virus is the same which is infecting the eyes and throat.

Schools closed in Arunachal Pradesh’s Imphal to curb conjunctivitis

In the wake of rising cases of eye infections, also known as pink eyes,all the schools have been closed till 29 July ( till class 8th), sayd Office of the Deputy Commissioner in an official notice on Monday.

The circular stated that the decision was taken after conducting a survey for five days by the DSU and ICC team. As several cases of conjunctivitis were reported, the administration decided to announce holiday to break the chain of transmission.

Other than the capital city of the state, Longding district administration also announced temporary closure of schools in Kanubari sub-division following outbreak of conjunctivitis.

In a circular, Longding Deputy Commissioner Bani Lego said, “Considering the seriousness of the matter, all the heads of schools under Kanubari and Lawnu educational blocks are hereby directed to close down their respective schools temporarily till July 29, in order to break the chain of spread of the disease”.

Spurt in Conjunctivitis cases in Gujarat

Amid the rainy season, there has been a rise in cases in Vadodra. The infection was spread among people of all age groups. The city is reporting close to 500 cases per day, reported Indian Express. As the cases are rising significantly, student unions spreading the word of taking precautions to avoi the infection. In last few days, Panchmahal’s health department ahs recorded around 1,300 casesm reported IE. As the cases are rising continuosly, district administration is engaged in spreading information to prevent the disease.
